Pacquiao to fight Clottey in Dallas - b Reuters

The Pacquiao vs Clottey fight will still be a good one even if fans were looking forward to the fight with Mayweather.

I think Mayweather Jr. was never meant to be a match-up with Pacquiao. He and his father are just all talk.

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will defend his title against Ghanaian Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas on March 13, the Filipino's promoter and the Cowboys owner said Sunday.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum finalized the deal after talks of a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. fizzled out over Mayweather's demand for a rigorous dope testing procedure.

"I have wanted to bring a major boxing event to North Texas for many years, so why not bring in the biggest and the best?" Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement.

"Manny Pacquiao is boxing's number one pound-for-pound attraction and the world champion," Jones added.

"Manny defending his title against Joshua Clottey is not just a great event, it's a great fight, and one we can showcase to the fullest in Cowboys Stadium. We're going to promote this like it was the Super Bowl."

The new $1.2 billion stadium will seat 40,000 for the pay-per-view bout and Arum said in a statement he was delighted with the venue.

"Manny Pacquiao is the lone star of boxing," he said, referring to the nickname of the state of Texas.

"There isn't a more appropriate place in the world for him to fight."

Pacquiao has a 50-3-1 record with 38 knockouts. He won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title with a 12th round knockout of three-time world champion Miguel Cotto.

Clottey has a 35-3 record with 21 knockouts. He claimed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title in 2008 by defeating American Zab Judah but lost a split decision to Puerto Rican Cotto last June.-source

Boxer Pacquiao to fight Clottey at Cowboys Stadium

The Pacquiao vs Clottey fight will be held at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium on March 13. It has a capacity of 100,000 seats but will only be set up for 40,000.

Will they reach 40,000 spectators or go over that? Clottey is not as popular as Mayweather, but let's hope the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight will be a good one.

Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao will take on Ghana's Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium, the billion-dollar state-of-the-art home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, promoters said Sunday.

Promoter Bob Arum and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced the deal a day after Arum attended the Cowboys' NFL playoff victory over Philadelphia at the stadium on Saturday night.

Jones had put the facility forward as a venue for the anticipated fight March 13 between Pacquiao and unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather.

That super-fight fell through last week over a disagreement on the drug testing protocol, and Arum lined up Clottey for Pacquaio's World Boxing Organization welterweight title defense.

"Jerry Jones knows exactly how big and important this event is which is why it was so easy to put this deal together," Arum said. "If Jerry could sell me on Cowboys Stadium and the North Texas market, you know he is going to have no problems selling out Cowboys Stadium on March 13.

"We are ready to roll up our sleeves and promote Manny?s debut as World Welterweight Champion. Manny Pacquiao is the lone star of boxing. There isn't a more appropriate place in the world for him to fight."

Jones told ESPN.com he was thrilled to host a bout involving a fighter of Pacquaio's stature, regardless of his opponent, and even if the fight with Clottey won't be the mega money-spinner that Pacquiao-Mayweather promised to be.

"I never got into the NFL or bought the Cowboys for the money," Jones told ESPN.com. "I was lucky enough to already have some.

"This is about having a fighter like Manny and an event like this in our venue. When we finished the deal, I was shaking as much as I was when we beat the Eagles. I'm just as excited."

The stadium won't be configured for maximum 100,000 seating capacity. They'll start out planning in the 40,000 seat range, but can increase that capacity if needed.

"Manny defending his title against Joshua Clottey is not just a great fight, it's a great event, and one we can showcase to the fullest in Cowboys Stadium," Jones said. "We?re going to promote this like it was the Super Bowl."

The hard-hitting Clottey, who lives in New York, is coming off a controversial split-decision loss to Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto last June, a fight many thought Clottey won.

Cotto was then pounded by Pacquiao in November in a fight stopped in the final round.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, which had been tentatively scheduled for March 13 in Las Vegas fell apart over the issue of pre-fight anti-doping blood tests. Mayweather originally insisted they be conducted right up to the fight, while Pacquiao wanted a 30-day cut off before the bout. They were unable to reach a compromise.-source

PACQUIAO CLASH CONFIRMED IN DALLAS - by sportinglife.com

The Pacquiao vs Clottey fight will be held at the Dallas Cobwoys Stadium. This is a surprisingly different venue.

Will they be able to fill up the 40,000 seats for this fight?

***
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones last night welcomed the opportunity to host world championship boxing at the new Cowboys Stadium after Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey's welterweight clash was confirmed for March 13 in Texas.

In the wake of the collapse of the proposed Pacquiao megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr on the same date, the Filipino (50-3-2, 38 KOs) pound-for-pound king has opted to defend his WBO title against Clottey (35-3, 21 KOs) of Ghana.

Jones was convinced the fight would sell the 40,000 tickets necessary for a capacity crowd once his stadium was configured for boxing.

"I have wanted to bring a major boxing event to North Texas for many years, so why not bring in the biggest and the best?" Jones said.

"Manny Pacquiao is boxing's number one pound for pound attraction and the world champion.

"Manny defending his title against Joshua Clottey is not just a great fight, it's a great event, and one we can showcase to the fullest in Cowboys Stadium.

"We're going to promote this like it was the Super Bowl."

Top Rank chairman and Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said Jones had convinced him Cowboys Stadium, which on Saturday hosted more than 100,000 fans for the NFL play-off victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, was an ideal fit.

"Jerry Jones knows exactly how big and important this event is which is why it was so easy to put this deal together," Arum said.

"If Jerry could sell me on Cowboys Stadium and the North Texas market, you know he is going to have no problems selling out Cowboys Stadium on March 13.

"We are ready to roll up our sleeves and promote Manny's debut as world welterweight champion."

Pacquiao cemented his status as the pound for pound best fighter when he won the WBO welterweight title with a 12th round knock-out of Miguel Cotto, who was also Clottey's last opponent.

New York-based Clottey lost a split decision to the Puerto Rican at Madison Square Garden last June.

Pacquiao's victory over Cotto in Las Vegas last November set up a proposed clash with the unbeaten Mayweather Jr, but the two camps failed to agree terms for a March 13 showdown following a row over pre-fight blood testing and Arum moved quickly to secure an alternative fight.-source

Pacquiao vs. Clottey to take place at Cowboy stadium – News - by boxingnews24.com

While it's true that Joshua Clottey is not as popular as Mayweather Jr., I'm sure he'll give it all because he has nothing to lose.

Manny Pacquiao should watch out for fighters who have nothing to lose, because they'll be putting their heart out into the fight.

***
According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the bout between World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Joshua Clottey will be taking place at the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Arlington, Texas. Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboy football team and Dallas Cowboy stadium, was very eager to land the Pacquiao-Clottey fight for his large stadium in Texas. Jones reportedly offered up $25 million site fee for the bout.

As such, the Pacquiao vs. Clottey bout will move ahead to March 13th. Floyd Mayweather was supposed to be Pacquiao’s opponent, but he made the mistake of asking for random blood tests to take place before he would fight Pacquiao. Although Manny was willing to take three of the tests, Mayweather wanted them to take place within the last 30 days before the fight. Pacquiao agreed on taking the last test at 24 days, but Mayweather wanted 14 days.

The Dallas Cowboy stadium would have been perfect for the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight, but it’s unclear whether they will be able sell it out or even come close to selling it out with the Pacquiao-Clottey match up. The stadium seats 100,000. Arum, however, thinks it’s going to be a huge event, even though Clottey isn’t a big star.

“This is going to be one of the biggest events in the history of boxing,” Arum says. It also might be a disappointment. Pacquiao has done well recently with big pay per view bouts, but he’s been blessed by a big name star opposing him. Clottey, good but flawed fighter, isn’t well known to casual boxing fans of the sport. He’s not an Oscar De La Hoya or Floyd Mayweather.

This fight will be a good test to see how popular Pacquiao is. If he can sell out the Dallas Cowboy stadium against Clottey, there would be no reason for Pacquiao to waste time fighting a big named star like Mayweather in the future, even if Mayweather is agreeable to fighting Pacquiao without blood tests for PEDs. Pacquiao could then pick and choose and fight anyone in the top 10, and still do well. -source

Arum Makes It Official Pacquiao Vs. Clottey At Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium

Mayweather is just being a coward for running away from his fight with Manny Pacquiao. Because of this, the Pacquiao vs Clottey fight has just been signed to take over the canceled fight.

I think Mayweather was finding excuses to skip his fight with Manny.

***
Bob Arum promotes both Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and African boxer Joshua Clottey and is finalizing a deal so both fighters can face off in the boxing ring for March 13, 2010.

The signing came on the heels of the failed negotiations between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao teams to come to an agreement over a blood testing cut off date. Mayweather and his team wanted a 14 day cutoff, and Pacquiao refused by insisting on a 24 day cut off, which led to Mayweather Jr. pulling out of the fight.

After watching the Dallas Cowboys football team beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the NFL playoff’s, Top Rank Promoter, Bob Arum, said he was so impressed with the brand new Jerry Jones Dallas Cowboys Stadium that he will have the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight at the $1.2 billion dollar venue.

Arum plans to accommodate 50,000 boxing fans in the 100,000 seat football stadium.

The pay per view would likely be carried by HBO and Arum plans on filling the undercard with exciting Latino fighters and putting Antonio Margarito on the undercard in his comeback fight since his suspension for having suspicious substances in his hand wraps prior to his loss to Sugar Shane Mosley. -source

Pacquiao, Clottey do Dallas - by fightnews.com

This is the going to be the newest fight of Manny Pacquiao. The Pacquiao vs Clottey fight will be, surprisingly, at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium on March 13. This fight takes over the canceled Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight.

***
The stars will fight, big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas! Jerry Jones and Bob Arum, owner of the Dallas Cowboys and chairman of Top Rank, respectively, announced today that Cowboys Stadium would be the site of the Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey world welterweight championship fight taking place on Saturday, March 13 and broadcast live on pay-per-view. Formal news conferences at Cowboys Stadium and in New York next week will provide details on tickets and the pay-per-view broadcast. Pacquiao vs Clottey will be promoted by Top Rank, in association with the Dallas Cowboys and MP Promotions. Pacquiao and Clottey boast a combine record of (85-6-2, 59 KOs) — a winning percentage of 91% and a victory by knockout ratio of nearly 70%. “I have wanted to bring a major boxing event to North Texas for many years, so why not bring in the biggest and the best?” asked Jones. “Manny Pacquiao is boxing’s No. 1 pound for pound attraction and the world champion. Manny defending his title against Joshua Clottey is not just a great fight, it’s a great event, and one we can showcase to the fullest in Cowboys Stadium. We’re going to promote this like it was the Super Bowl.”

Cowboys Stadium will be configured for 40,000 fans for the event.

“Jerry Jones knows exactly how big and important this event is which is why it was so easy to put this deal together,” said Arum. “As a lifelong Giants fan I had to receive special dispensation from Steve Tisch, the Giants’ Chairman and Executive Vice President, to bring this event to Cowboys Stadium and he blessed the deal. If Jerry could sell me on Cowboys Stadium and the North Texas market, you know he is going to have no problems selling out Cowboys Stadium on March 13. We are ready to roll up our sleeves and promote Manny’s debut as world welterweight champion. Manny Pacquiao is the lone star of boxing. There isn’t a more appropriate place in the world for him to fight!”

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs), of General Santos City, Philippines, will be defending the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title he earned in his last fight, produced by a 12th round knockout of three-time world champion Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao’s victory made him the first man to win seven titles in as many different weight divisions, with his last three world championships coming by way of knockout. The consensus Fighter of the Year for the third time in the past four years, Pacquiao’s resume features victories over future Hall of Famers, including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Lopez and Cotto. His knockout victories over Cotto and Hatton made him the 2009 pay-per-view king, exceeding two million buys combined.

Clottey (35-3, 21 KOs), a native of Accra, Ghana, now fighting out of Bronx, NY, captured the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title in 2008 by trouncing three-time world champion Zab Judah. His career has been a highlight reel of thrills featuring victories over two-division world champion Diego Corrales and undfeated contender Richard Gutierrez and a close decision losse to world champion Antonio Margarito. In his last fight Clottey lost a controversial split decision to defending WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden. Clottey is currently world-rated No. 1 by the WBO and No. 4 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). -source
